Christ does not leave us alone in our sickness and troubles, but comes to us in His sacrament, accompanied by Angels.
Christ is close to His friends, in every circumstance. One day Christ asked His Angels to wait at one side, in Holy Communion, as He sat down beside me, put out His hand to comfort me, and urged me to rest beside Him in my sickness and exhaustion.

I saw that I am not a beggar, but his daughter; and that this tired body only hides the glory within.
When I am close to God, in sickness, putting my trust in Him, I am like a child who rests on her Father's shoulder.

Declining health can be seen not as a descent - but rather a 'flight' with Christ, above former occupations, soaring towards Heaven.

"I am Holding You in My Love". God the Father showed me that wherever I am - even in Hospital - I am in His care.
Christ has a path for each of us to follow. Whether we are Clergy or laity, married or single, busy in prominent tasks or 'hidden away' in obscure jobs or illness, we glorify Him if we follow the way He reveals to us. One step at a time, we can walk in obedience and trust.
Illness gives us an opportunity to ask ourselves, as we think about the end of life: "Shall I meet God with a peaceful or a guilty heart?"
Sometimes, when we are tired, Christ calls us to rest, and 'helps us' to find that rest in our lives.
The Lord is no more concerned by my distraction at Mass, when I'm tired and in pain, than if I were a sick child on her father's lap, at Mass. He is glad that I am present at Mass out of love for Jesus.
The Lord told me the when I find myself in X-ray departments and operating theatres I must look upon them as my venues for mission, given to me by God, just as certain towns and places were shown to the Apostles, for them to evangelise by their words and example. I can show out the joy of Christ, even in trouble and pain.
Christ would not let me pray anymore, when I was exhausted from giving a talk about Him. It was as if He held me like someone holding a sick relation, as He invited me to rest, and to recover my energy.
It is important to persevere in prayer even during sickness. It draws graces upon the sick person - even if the prayers must be wordless or abbreviated. It helps others directly - and indirectly, when the sick person sets a good example to healthy people tempted not to pray.
Christ showed me that when I am sick and exhausted and find it hard to pay attention at Mass, I am no more to blame than an exhausted child who cannot help falling asleep on her father's shoulder, held safely in his loving arms.
Christ invited me to rest upon His shoulder. He could see how ill I was, and exhausted, as I received Him in Holy Communion.
No matter how much confusion or uncertainty we experience - even in sickness or danger - there is one, living God in control of the Universe, in Whose care we live. Whether we live or die, we live and die at times appointed by Him, even when we object.
