Jesus prays in agony to his Heavenly Father in the Garden of Gethesemane
Jesus prays in agony to his Heavenly Father in the Garden of Gethesemane
Christ prayed in agony to His Father, in Gethsemane, sweating blood, thinking of the horrors ahead.
We can offer up our sufferings in union with Jesus in His Passion, to comfort Him, and to help other souls. Every suffering in our lives can be offered up, united with Jesus in that same type of suffering in His own life: our fear united to His in Gethsemane; our being misunderstood, with Jesus deserted by His Apostles; our grief, with Jesus weeping for Lazarus; our fear of evil forces, with Jesus being tempted by Satan.
The same Spirit who comforted Christ in Gethsemane can console us
The same Spirit who comforted Christ in Gethsemane can console us
Christ understands all our griefs and sorrows. When Christ prayed to His Father in Gethsemane, He was thinking not only of the horrors which lay ahead, but also about the wonderful joys of earthly life that He would soon be leaving behind. He was joyful about going home to Heaven, but His heart ached at the thought of leaving earthly friendships and earthly beauty.
Christ looks upon the faithful people who have come to the 'Mass of the Lord's Supper' on Holy Thursday: people only there because they love Him, Who suffered to save us. We touch His heart by our devotion, right up to the stripping of the altar, when we prepare to accompany Christ to Gethsemane.
