As Mary travelled to Bethlehem, she was like the Son she would bear, resembling Him in humility, love, trust and obedience.
It can happen that someone finds himself so isolated and unhappy, through his mistakes and much-regretted decisions, that it's as if he waits in a deep pit, praying for the courage and humility to reach out and accept the necessary help, to return to joy.
A person who lives in self-love, greed, pride, hard-heartedness or any sinful state, who will not change, builds a 'brick wall' between himself and God: the God who is made Present in every celebration of the Mass
The Lord does not want us to do penance all the time, and become miserable, or proud of our self-sacrifice. There's a time for penance and rigour, and a time for a good rest, with a cup of hot chocolate, and a biscuit - in the Lord's company, at peace.

An event so marvellous as the birth, in our world, of the Incarnate Son of God could not pass unnoticed. The Angels who witnessed this event could not have failed to burst into song, praising the Father for His infinite love for mankind, and praising Christ for His love and humility.
Christ sees that humble people are willing to benefit from the customs and sacramentals of the Church, in order to gain extra graces, receive Divine protection, and feel assured of certain help from God and the Saints and Angels.
The Holy Souls in Purgatory undergo an interior cleansing and transformation, as they realise how much time they wasted in earthly life, when they might have shown greater love towards God and their neighbours, in humility and obedience.
We 'worship' ourselves by fulfilling only our own plans and ambitions, with little thought for God's wishes. If we idolise ourselves we shall have little possibility of being with God in Eternity.
