Christ sometimes permits us to work for many years without our seeing any results.
He circled my soul, seeing it swept by long labour and by His power, and then He threw His comforting cloak around me.
Even when temptations swirl around us, Christ does not let us go, if we hold on to Him.
The Most Holy Trinity draws on, attracts and guides the soul which reaches out in trust, despite all trials.
Even in the darkness of our sufferings Jesus comforts and guides us
Though we might believe that we are serving God faithfully, we might rarely see any results from our acts of charity or self-giving - as if we were flying over a cloudy landscape with only an occasional glimpse of the fields below. Christ assures us, however, that all who remain faithful will one day see the great crowd of people whom they have helped by their penances, good works and intercessions.
A workman leans on his shovel amidst the mess and clutter of a building-site, not yet seeing the reason for all His labour: so it is with us as we persevere in faith!
As an exhausted workman one day might gaze, astonished, at the shining road built by his labour, so we will marvel one day when God's 'fruit' will burst from our lives.
Christ and Our Lady are like Heavenly Attendants, helping us while something wonderful is being born from spiritual turmoil and perseverance.
Some, who are reluctant to follow Christ, point to life's map, demanding that Christ lead them only over easy terrain.
In the spiritual life, a staircase lies ahead, very steep, yet with resting places. At the top stands God's throne. The way is clear.

People who die whilst praying (like those who died praying the Rosary on the Titanic) are marching along a road which seems to lead to darkness; yet it's as if, by their prayer, each person carries a flaming torch on high which lights up the sure way to Heaven - even if the Way leads first through the Ocean.
Even when we trust in God and try to serve Him, it can seem as if life is a puzzle, with unexpected and ill-fitting parts. If we persevere, however, we shall see how Christ has been at work to make a special pattern out of those apparent oddments, for a special reason.
Our progress towards Heaven can be like a sales graph. We have done well if we have moved steadily upwards, despite occasional stumbles on the path, and have never turned back since first giving our life and heart to Christ.
We need to trust in Christ in all difficulties, and value His Will and His opinion above all. We allow His light to shine powerfully from our lives when we have removed all 'obstacles'.
Those who, for love of God, have endured spiritual darkness in patience are brought at last to 'fly' in prayer far above everyday concerns. No-one reaches such blissful contemplation except those who rise up through the grace of Christ. It cannot be achieved by merely human efforts.
Everyone who is determined to aim for perfection, and to love Christ as He deserves to be loved, will at some stage need to 'hold on' with bleeding hands, weary with the effort, and shaken by the assaults of the Evil one.
One day, if we have persevered in the Faith, our darkness will be replaced by glory. The brave soul who has climbed to the top of the 'ladder', even with bleeding hands, will see Christ and Our Lady waiting to greet Him.
