Good parents offer warnings about the dangers their children must avoid if they wish to remain safe and at peace. Likewise, out of love for us, Christ has issued warnings - today through His Church - about sins to avoid, and the disastrous consequences of rebellion.

Though we can see hints of God's glory in nature, we can only 'touch' God in and through Christ. Sin made a gigantic barrier - like a vast curtain across the skies - between Heaven and earth. A screaming child, incoherent with anger, needs to be left to realise his need of help, and to admit his foolishness. Our wise God gives rebellious adults opportunities for reflection. He does not force us to do His Will. He even allows us, if we insist, to separate ourselves from Him eternally.

Someone who does great work for God can be held 'upright' in humility by two guy ropes: the knowledge of his sinfulness and of God's holiness.

Christ counts as done to Himself the good or evil that we do to others. He counts as done to Himself whatever insult, blow, ill-humour, or lack of reverence is directed to those 'other Christs', our priests, whom Christ has chosen to lead and serve us.

The Father in Heaven sees a small figure, bowing before Him and ablaze like a diamond. No scar remains from long-forgiven sins.
