The teachings of the Church should be followed by all Catholics; yet in the matter of personal devotions we can adopt a form of prayer or meditation that especially appeals to us, without having to adopt them all. A sensible person tasting a Chinese meal for the first time would try a little of most dishes, to see what suited them, without trying to consume everything.

The family which has a roof over its head and a table to eat at is well prepared for everyday life and education. Sound doctrine is like the roof and the table of our Christian life. Those who rely only on feelings and want to picnic all the time have no shelter for themselves or for others, when gales blow, and animals trample the food into the ground.

The idols or 'golden calves' which many people worship today, are their own selfish opinions, often contrary to the Church's teachings, their lack of reverence towards God, their neglect of penance and prayer, and the neglect of the ordinary duties of their state of life.

The Father is reaching out all the time, through Jesus, to 'gather in' and give salvation to people all over the world. Yet not many listen to Jesus and to the teaching of His Church.

Recent Popes, like their predecessors, speak the truth about morality. It is Christ who teaches us through them. They cannot invite us to sin, by changing Christ's teachings.

The Kingdom of Heaven, where God reigns in glory, extends as far as Earth: to each place, or each soul, where God's Will is done. Wherever people believe what is taught by Christ and His Church, and out of love for Christ put his teachings into practice, in truth, justice, love, purity and holiness, the Kingdom is made present. All are invited to enter.

The Pope, the Bishop of Rome, is the chief Bishop, and the focus of unity in the Church. From Rome, the Holy Father guides and teaches the Church, as his predecessors have done since the time of the apostles.

Those who want to help others in their faith, but then offer them untruth mixed with truth, by contradicting the teaching of the Church, are like people inadvertently offering a mixture of good food and poisonous berries to the children in their care.

If the Bishops would examine their diaries, they would see what proportion of their time is spent in teaching the Faith, or directly encouraging people to put it into practice. They will be accountable to God, when they die, for the state of the souls in their care.

By it's very nature, love is fruitful and generous; and so the Lord invites all married people to understand that the moral teachings of the Church are true. Whoever uses contraception, even in difficult circumstances, is acting against God's wishes, and no longer shines with the radiance that comes from the Holy Spirit.

Many of Christ's brave friends have suffered mockery, imprisonment and death, in order to remain faithful to the teachings of His Church, and out of love for Him.

To move carelessly into serious sin is to be in danger of being cut off from God forever. It's like when a diver in a flooded cave keeps moving into the next cave, without a guideline. Catholics are wise if they rely on sure doctrine and regular prayer.

Christ is pleased whenever someone writes clearly about right and wrong in marriage. Few are willing to support and promote the Church's teaching about openness to life and the immorality of contraception.

Someone who wants to prepare for Heaven should simply do the Will of God, for love of God - whether it is by labouring, teaching, serving, or praying; or simply offering up her sufferings in sickness, with Jesus, to help souls.
