A dense cloud seems to cover those parts of the earth where there is war, which cuts off many people from God. Wherever there is conflict there is danger for souls as well as bodies. Except amongst those who stay close to God, there is immorality or hatred or revenge or other evils being worked bodily or within souls.

Christ came to earth, to be born in poverty, for our sakes; yet we need to feast as well as to fast in His Church. We feast on His birthday, for example, in preparation for the Eternal feasting which takes place in Heaven, in an eternal celebration of His Love.

God receives the greatest honour when the priest's supreme desire at Mass is to give glory to Him through a reverent offering of the Holy Sacrifice. A good priest also wishes to edify the congregation, but he recognises that the Mass is God's act: infinitely powerful and effective no matter how well or badly the participants prepare and take part.

We need to give practical help to those in need, as well as prayer, when people are in trouble. It is not enough, usually, just to say: "I'll pray for you".

Those Christians who struggle to be Christ-like in difficult circumstances do well to 'look' at Christ's earthly life. The founder of Christianity lived in His own country as a man of peace; and he spent much of his time healing as well as preaching. His followers should be people of peace.

Someone who follows a humble, quiet, persevering way of prayer and faithfulness to God, is on the Way to Heaven, just as a man on a straight, well-lit motorway is making a safe journey to the city; unlike those who choose to struggle on foot, picking their own route across country, and encountering rabbit-holes, barbed wire and wild animals.

Though it is right that we travel to Lourdes to pray in the Grotto, and to other shrines, Christ invites us to make a 'grotto' of our own heart, where we can meet Our Lady and confide in her, who is at all times close to God Who dwells within us.

By our Baptism, and the indwelling of God, we are given the gift of prayer. When we pray in Jesus' name to the Father we are certain of being heard. It's as if we have a megaphone - but we make a clearer 'sound' if, by penance, we keep it free from dust.
